The Little Rock Fire Department, under the command of Chief Charles Hafer (4), was growing as the city continued to thrive with industry locating close to the river and along the network of railroads within the city. Many large industries located in East little Rock as well as a large community who were employed in these industries. The closest fire station was located at 12th & Commerce, the next closest was at Markham & Arch next to city hall.

Considerable time was lost in responding to this area of the city. Using the guideline set forth by the National Board of Fire Underwriters, the location of East 6th & Fletcher Streets was chosen as the ideal location for a fire station. A Municipal Bond was voted in by the people of Little Rock on

November 5,1929 for the amount of $555,000.00. ($300,000 dedicated for Fire Department Improvements to fund 3 fire stations and 9 fire apparatus cost.)  (3)/ (4) /(7) / (8)

The property was purchased in March 1930 and construction was started. Total cost of the station $14,229.00. The station was constructed in 64 days!  Engine Company 9 moved into their new station on June 16, 1930. The apparatus was a 1929 Chain drive American Lafrance 750 rated pumper. This apparatus was replaced by a new 1937 American LaFrance pumper January 17, 1937.

Engine Company 11 was formed July 14, 1930 giving two fire companies for this growing area of industries and homes. Engine 11 remained at station 9   until October 1, 1945 when it relocated to 22nd & Peyton Street.
